K-pop Idols’ Real Korean Names and What They Mean

June 5, 2026 · 7 min read

Most K-pop stage names are short, punchy, and easy to say worldwide. But underneath, idols carry ordinary Korean given names — chosen by their parents, with real Hanja meanings. Here are some of the most famous, and what they mean.

A meaning note
Hanja for a specific person isn’t always public, so the meanings below are the common readings for those names. One sound can map to several characters — see Hangul vs Hanja.

Soloists

  • IU → Lee Ji-eun (이지은)ji (智) wisdom and eun (恩) grace. The stage name “IU” reads as “I and you.”
  • G-Dragon → Kwon Ji-yong (권지용)ji (志/智) will or wisdom and yong (龍) dragon — which is exactly where the stage name comes from.
  • CL → Lee Chae-rin (이채린)chae (彩) brilliance, color and rin (麟/潾) a auspicious creature or clear water.

BTS

  • RM → Kim Nam-joon (김남준)nam (南) south and joon (俊) talented, outstanding.
  • Jin → Kim Seok-jin (김석진)seok (碩) great, substantial and jin (珍) precious.
  • Suga → Min Yoon-gi (민윤기)yoon (潤) sleek, abundant and gi (其/基) foundation.
  • J-Hope → Jung Ho-seok (정호석)ho (號/浩) and seok (錫) tin, a bestowed gift.
  • Jimin → Park Ji-min (박지민)ji (智) wisdom and min (旼) gentle, harmonious.
  • V → Kim Tae-hyung (김태형)tae (泰) great, peaceful and hyung (亨) prosperous, smooth.
  • Jungkook → Jeon Jung-kook (전정국) — “Jungkook” is his real given name: jung (正) upright and kook (國) nation.

BLACKPINK

  • Jisoo → Kim Ji-soo (김지수)ji (智) wisdom and soo (秀) excellent, elegant.
  • Rosé → Park Chae-young (박채영)chae (彩) brilliance, color and young (英) flower, brilliant.
  • Jennie → Jennie Kim (제니) — an English-style given name; her family name is Kim (金).

What this tells us

Notice the pattern: stage names are built for the global market, but the real names are classic Korean given names whose meanings — wisdom, grace, talent, uprightness — are the qualities parents wish for. Jungkook is a nice reminder that sometimes the real name is striking enough to keep.

It’s the same logic behind the cast of KPop Demon Hunters: a Korean name carries intention in its characters. If you want one of your own — a real name with real meaning, not a stage handle — here’s how it’s done.
